ROTHWELL CORINTHIANS 5 V 2 DAVENTRY UNITED
Rothwell: Tom Cross, Chris Dunn, Tom Judge, Lee Deacon, Kevin Fox (Elliott Roberts), Luke Bewers, Tom Johnson, Tony Ielapi, Dan Morris, Sam Johnson, Andy White (Chris Torrence).
Daventry: Shaun Allen, Ben Collins (Ross Irvine), Leigh Roberts, Ady Pestell, Rob Steele, Wayne Richardson, Michael Parkes, Ian Waldock, Tommy Waldock, Tony Burt, Joel Young (Liam Hynes).
All good things must come to an end, but for them to end in a disappointing display at the start of a busy Christmas period was something United could have done without. Corinthians had been putting some eye opening performances of late and this was another.
United took the lead after Wayne Richardson and Ben Collins combined well to give United the lead after fifteen minutes, although this was short lived as Rothwell hit straight back through Sam Johnson three minutes later. United failed to take their chances in the first half with Tommy Waldock having a couple of great chances to extend the lead. Early in the second half Tony Burt's shot hit the underside of the bar and came down a foot over the line, the ensuing melee saw the stand-in official flagging like his life depended on it. He reported to the referee that he had flagged because he was not sure if the ball had crossed the line, neither was the ref so he awarded a drop ball 30 yards out. Quite how we came to that decision is beyond me.
That was the turning point for United as Rothwell hit them on the break and extended their lead. Two more goals added to United’s misery and a Rothwell own goal reduced the deficit, but it was all to little to late for United as they started the Christmas period with a disappointing performance and result.
