DAVENTRY UNITED 2 v 1 HUNTINGDON TOWN

Daventry: Roger Leeson, Rob Steele, Leigh Roberts, Ross Irvine, Ady Pestell, Wayne Richardson(Todd Sawko), Michael Parkes, Ian Waldock, Tommy Waldock, Tony Burt (Liam Hynes), Joel Young.

With only one point the difference between the two sides this was always going to be a very tight encounter, United just edged it in the early encounters but could not find the breakthrough they needed. Tommy Waldock flashed a shot just wide, Wayne Richardson had a thunderous volley blocked and Tony Burt saw his effort turned round the post for a corner. From the resulting corner Ady Pestell smashed the ball in from close range to give United the breakthrough they needed on 22 minutes.

Huntingdon would not lay down and equalised through Richard Moore three minutes later. Sadly on 35 minutes Ben Cottingham and Micheal Parkes challenged for the ball and as he landed Ben sustained a knee injury that required the assistance of the ambulance services, Ben was airlifted by Air ambulance to Coventry Hospital. We wish him well and a speedy recovery.

After a delay of one and a quarter hours both side’s opted to play on and the final ten minutes of the first half saw no change in the score line. With the light slowly fading it was a quick change around at half time and again United came out fighting. First Tony Burt and then Tommy Waldock saw chances going just over the bar, Roger Leeson saved well with his feet to deny Huntingdon the lead. Then, with twenty minutes to go, new Dad Micheal Parkes curled the ball into the net from twenty yards to give United the lead. Huntingdon’s frustration began to show for the final fifteen minutes as they resorted to strong arm tactics resulting in several of their players entered into the referee’s notebook but United held firm and collected all three points.
